The Twins on Thursday: Confessions of An Angry Girl by Louise Rozett

"The Twins on Thursday" is reserved for the Twins' joint reviews. It is a special feature of our blog that discusses books that we either both like, dislike, or have mixed feelings about. This is also the day where we post reviews for books (and ARCs/Galleys) that have been sent to us by authors/galley sites/publishing houses. And because we don't believe much in uniformity, we'll be trying to mix things up a bit by adding random stuff in relation to our review (well, mostly for books we purchased anyway).

Summary:

1. I'm livid all the time. Why? My dad died. My mom barely talks. My brother abandoned us. I think I'm allowed to be irate, don't you?

2. I make people furious regularly. Want an example? I kissed Jamie Forta, a badass guy who might be dating a cheerleader. She is now enraged and out for blood. Mine.

3. High school might as well be Mars. My best friend has been replaced by an alien, and I see red all the time. (Mars is red and "seeing red" means being angry - get it?)

Here are some other vocab words that describe my life: Inadequate. Insufferable. Intolerable.

(Don't know what they mean? Look them up yourself.)

(Sorry. That was rude.)

Review:

Rose is angry. She lost her father, her brother left for college, her mother is barely talking to her, and her best friend seems to talk about nothing else but sleeping with her boyfriend and how to gain popularity. Then there's this boy who may or may not like her back. Problem is he might be dating a psychotic cheerleader named Regina. Sounds familiar? Sure it does, except Regina George of Mean Girls should sharpen her claws some more to be able to keep up with this kitty cat.  Rose is angry - no, seething - and she's got pretty good reasons to be so.

What we like about Rose is how real her voice is. Sure, Rose is angry but she isn't irrationally angry and she's actually got a pretty good head on her shoulders, she's quite level-headed and practical for someone feeling so abandoned and lost. There is absolutely nothing flippant about Rose, and we love her for that. She's trying to salvage her relationship with her best friend Tracie, and we have to commend Rose for putting up with everything that girl puts her through. While we get that popularity is a big thing in high school, we just never understood how people like Tracie, think that high school is pretty much the be all and end all. Sure, thinking too far ahead in the future is kind of a no-go for most teenagers, but seeing how she pretty much pushed and shoved her best friend out of the way to be accepted into a clique that won't even matter five years from now made us sad for all the people that Tracie represents. Meanwhile, the boy who has Rose's heart all aflutter is Jamie and he's a pretty cute artist who may or may not harbor feelings for her. We're not exactly sure how and why the "relationship" started, but hey, they are pretty cute together. We know we're supposed to be scratching our heads and trying to rationalize (Yes, rationalize. How sexy, no?) their attraction, but we kind of get it. Rose is kind and loyal to a fault, and I guess Jamie just can't help but be attracted to that.

Confessions of An Angry Girl is definitely not fluff material. We really thought that this was going to be one of those books with a main heroine who's angry just for the sake of being angry, and who plans to go all out for the attention of the cute jerk. But once again, we're proven wrong and we couldn't be happier about it.  It's like looking from a one-way mirror and watching real American high school action happen.

Do we recommend you getting this book? Yes, yes, yes! (Do you know how many contemporary books we're actually really excited for? You could count it on one hand.) But you might want to wait for the next book, Confessions of An Almost Girlfriend, before you pick up this one. The abrupt ending almost killed us. Why does May have to be so far away?

Confessions of An Almost Girlfriend is expected to come out in May 2013.

  1. This sounds really interesting! I like that this isn't fluff material, a lot of contemporary books are warm and fuzzy which is good at times but sometimes you just need a change. Great review! Will check this one out :)
